Trailer Towing Training Courses
(B+E trailer towing course)
- Do you understand the rules for towing trailers?
- Not sure if you are entitled to tow?
Car licences obtained before 1 January 1997
If you passed a car test before 1 January 1997 you keep your existing entitlement to tow trailers until your licence expires. This means you're generally entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes maximum authorised mass (MAM). You also have entitlement to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750kgs MAM.
Car licences obtained on or after 1 January 1997
If you passed a car test on or after 1 January 1997 you're limited to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes maximum authorised mass towing a trailer up to 750kgs, or a vehicle and trailer combination up to 3.5 tonnes MAM providing the MAM of the trailer doesn't exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle. You will need to pass an additional driving test in B+E if you wish to tow a caravan or trailer combination which exceeds these weight limits.

Still not sure or want an assessment?
Basically a 750kg trailer is the type you see stacked up outside well known car accessory retailers.
New Driver have specialist trainers who are trained to explain the requirements of the test and if you need to do one. They can train you in all aspects of towing trailers and what the test requirements are. Normally we carry out the training in your vehicle however trailers suitable for the test can be provided if needed. The test is based on the lorry test and has two parts, an off road manoeuvring section and a one hour on-road drive.
2 hour assessment including assessment of manoeuvring ability and how many lessons you are likely to need and a visit to your local VOSA testing station. (Assumes centre is close enough in the time frame of the 2 hour assessment.) only £50.
